Faculty of the Nova Scotia Community College will no longer be part of the Nova Scotia Teachers Union.
In a news release issued today, results of a vote indicated 64 percent of 570 NSCC faculty members that voted chose to leave the union.
131 of 168 professional support workers also voted, and 56 percent were in favour of leaving the NSTU.
A separate Nova Scotia Community College Academic Union has been formed, and the president of the new union Barbara Gillis says they’ll be reaching out to the membership for volunteers to serve on committees to gather suggestions on how best to build union membership.
A five-member steering committee will initially oversee the new union’s formation.
The vote was overseen by the NS Labour Relations Board on June 8, 11 and 12 at 13 NSCC campuses.
Before the vote was held, NSTU president Liette Doucet said what’s best for education across Nova Scotia is for the NSTU to remain as one.
