The mayor of Clark’s Harbour says South Shore-St. Margaret’s MP Bernadette Jordan has failed the town.
Leigh Stoddart says for the second year in a row, they are fighting with the feds for funding for two summer student positions.
He says this year’s applications were confirmed and the town was even told funding would be in place.
“They’re now saying with withdrew the application on the same day that we applied for it online. This didn’t happen according to our clerk. After multiple calls to our MP, Bernadette Jordan, she was at best, unable or, at worst, unwilling to see that this was corrected.”
Mayor Stoddart says it’s also unfortunate for the two students who need the jobs to further their education.
Meanwhile, Bernadette Jordan says the application was never received because it was indeed withdrawn by the Town of Clark’s Harbour.
“I’ve been in discussion with the department on that, with the people who receive the application and it actually has to be withdrawn from the portal from where it was applied from. They (the town) actually get a message that asks ‘do you want to withdraw this application.’ You have to push withdraw button twice before that happens.”
She says there’s nothing that can be done at this point but says it’s important to remember that the federal government employs a lot of students.
“In the last two years we’ve actually had an increase in the amount of students that are employed in this riding. The whole point of the program is that students get employment and they are getting employment. They may not be getting it there, (Clark’s Harbour) but they are still getting employment.”
