Local firefighters have launched an awareness campaign to try and save four dispatch jobs at the Yarmouth department.
They are out in the community today handing out flyers and have established a social media presence.
The Town of Yarmouth is planning to issue a request for proposals to contract the service outside the community at a lower cost.
But firefighters say that will have a negative affect, and could lead to longer response times for first responders.
President of Local 2094 of the International Association of Firefighters Lynn Seeley says they want the public to express their opinion to Mayor Pam Mood and council.
“We don’t want to see this service privatized. There is nobody that can quote a price, take this service over, and offer the same level of service for the citizens we protect. If you care about your fire service and value the lives of those we protect, I urge you to contact the mayor and council.”
Mayor Mood says the quality of service will not be compromised, and no decisions have officially been made.
At last week’s council meeting, Mood did say something needs to change, and that local municipal units have had discussions.
