Fishermen and processors sat down with DFO last week in Yarmouth to talk about Marine Protected Areas. MPA’s are supposed to protect species and habitat, but the fishing industry believes something more insidious is happening. Nathan Blades of Sable Fish Packers of South Side in Shelburne County, believes seafood processors are being used as pawns. Bernie Berry of the Coldwater Lobster Association, says, once more, fishermen are being marginalized. Judith Maxwell with the Scotia Fundy Inshore Fishermen’s Association says it would only take one small accident on a drilling site to wipe out an entire fishery. We speak with the groups involved.
A Yarmouth hockey player will once again try to make the big leagues next season, with a new team. After being in the New York Rangers organization for nearly five years, Ryan Graves was traded to the Colorado Avalanche at the trade deadline. Graves, a third year AHL defenseman is hoping to get his shot with the Avs in September. He returned home after the season to spend time with family and friends, and we caught up with Graves during that time.
