Concern is mounting over the condition of three commercial fishing wharves in Cape Sable Island.
Dick Crowell is the manager of the Harbour Authority of Cape Sable Island, and says the South Side, Cripple Creek and Bulls Head wharves are deteriorating.
Crowell says it was a bad winter, and the three wharves on the eastern side of the island sustained even further damage.
“Another big storm could put one or more of them nonoperational. This would be an economic disaster. These harbours are the lifeblood of their communities.”
Crowell and others are gathering letters of support to send to the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Small Craft Harbours branch.
He says this is because despite their best efforts, they haven’t heard of a plan from DFO to repair the wharves.
Crowell says one problem is that small craft harbours are chronically underfunded.
