Clark’s Harbour’s town council will get a little smaller next municipal election.
The Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board has given approval for the town to cut down their council size from six and a mayor to four and a mayor.
The town of just north of 750 people, made the request a year ago, after determining surrounding areas with larger populations, had smaller councils.
The vote passed 4 – 3.
Mayor Leigh Stoddart says those against were worried about making quorum.
“It’s difficult to get people together for a meeting because these are not full time jobs, these are part time jobs and with the combination of (day) jobs in the next election, it might be difficult to have a meeting with just four councillors.”
There was no push back from the public on the decision.
The councillors serve ‘at large’ rather than in districts, which means no districts need to be redrawn with this move.
The move will save the town $23,000 annually.
