The Western Nova Scotia Cancer Support Network has come out with a challenge in an attempt to raise money for research and to raise awareness that Yarmouth needs a radiation centre.
Co-founder Derek Lesser says that the idea is that each member from the organization would donate five dollars every month to help families with expenses like driving to Halifax.
“The idea of the five dollar challenge came out as a way for people to give money each month to benefit people in the Tri County area who are going through cancer.”
Lesser says many cancer patients and their families cannot afford the costs associated with travelling to Halifax for treatment.
He thinks that if some of the more then 18,000 members donated five dollars a month, they could really help.
“I am very hopeful that the province will announce a radiation centre here but we should not really have to have a five dollar challenge because the services should be here.”
