A decision could be made Saturday morning whether or not the lobster fishery in southwestern Nova Scotia will start on Monday in LFA 34.
LFA 34 Port reps, DFO Yarmouth and Environment Canada held a conference call this morning.
Dwayne Surette, DFO’s Chief of Resource for Southwest Nova, says a conference call was held this morning and they were told the forecast is giving 25 knots for Monday morning.
He says DFO policy is that anything over 26 knots initiates a delay
“At this point we’ve rescheduled the call for tomorrow morning at 8’c’clock. At that point we’ll make a decision on what we’ll do next. We’ll either close it for Monday or we’ll have another call on Sunday to make sure the weather is safe.”
He says if the opening of the season Monday is postponed then further calls will take place to determine if fishermen can head out Tuesday.
The conference call for LFA 33 is scheduled for 4pm this afternoon.
