A recent aerial inspection of conservation areas in our region revealed that human activity is posing no risks.
Members of the Nature Conservancy of Canada boarded a helicopter yesterday to check out lands it has in Yarmouth, Digby, Shelburne and Queens counties.
Doug van Hemessen, the Conservancy’s Stewardship Coordinator, says it’s a good way to get a bird’s eye view of remote areas.
He says they looked for illegal harvesting, infrastructure development, dumping, and destruction of wildlife and plant habitats.
van Hemessen says it saves a lot of time as opposed to trying to reach the properties by vehicle or by foot.
“It often involves bushwhacking beyond that and even then it’s difficult from the ground to see all the property. But things are looking good confirming that we don’t have any issues. We didn’t see any unwanted impacts.”
The areas included islands in Mahone Bay and Lake Rossignol and the Tusket Lakes.
