Councils for the Towns of Shelburne and Lockeport and the Municipality of Shelburne will hold a joint meeting tomorrow night.
The three municipal units began getting together last year to seek out areas where they could co-operate and work together.
Shelburne Mayor Karen Mattatall says tomorrow night they’ll discuss shared services.
“We used to have a Joint Service Board where we dealt with waste diversion and fire service and building inspector but right now we are buying those services from the Municipality. We will be discussing those. Some people are interested in whether we should have a joint services model again.”
She says there could be discussion around all the municipal units having greater involvement in all municipal assets.
Mayor Mattatall says one issue that won’t be discussed tomorrow evening is amalgamation.
She says as these joint meetings continue, it may come up in the future.
Lockeport Mayor George Harding says as far as amalgamation is concerned, he and his council are open for any type of discussions.
He says amalgamation would be one of them but wouldn’t be the focus at this particular time but could certainly be explored.
“And maybe not in the usual fashion in amalgamation that has been happening around Nova Scotia, but tweeked to be different to suit our needs in eastern Shelburne County.”
He says the previous town council was strongly opposed to amalgamation.
When it comes to shared services, Harding says he’s a big proponent.
“Economy of scale. We can share services and purchase services from the other two municipal units that we couldn’t actually afford to have that service and pay for it all on our own.”
The meeting is at 6:30 at the Shelburne Community Centre and is open to the public.
