The Yarmouth County Athletic Awards are being held tonight in Tusket.
Nominations were compiled through the month of October for six special awards in male and female categories.
The Female Athlete of the Year is Allie Berry, who is in her third season with the Acadia Axewomen AUS basketball team.
She has been named an Academic All-Canadian two years in a row.
Berry says it’s an honour to be recognized in her hometown.
“I’m super proud that I’m from here, and that I get to represent my community in Wolfville, and across Nova Scotia in the AUS.”
Derek d’Eon is not in attendance tonight, but he was named Male Athlete of the Year for volleyball, playing for Team Nova Scotia at the Canada Games.
Coach of the Year honours went to Gary Baxter for basketball and baseball, and Nicole Gushue for athletics at Par-en-Bas and the Acadian Games.
Baxter led the Yarmouth Thunder U12 basketball team to a provincial title, and the Yarmouth Midget A Gateways to a provincial baseball title in 2017.
Baxter says it’s a tremendous honour.
“I feel really blessed, and I’m lucky enough to coach these young athletes. The parents deserve recognition as well, they bring the kids to the practices and to the games, it’s a lot of time and money on their part.”
Over 100 athletes are to be recognized for their individual and team accomplishments at provincial competitions or higher.
