There have been several chimney fires in our region lately.
As the temperatures drop more people are using wood stoves, furnaces and fireplaces.
Yarmouth Fire Chief John Verrall says not everyone gets their chimney cleaned, and that’s a concern.
“I don’t think some people really understand the importance of getting it done, especially this time of the season when you’re just starting it up for the winter and you haven’t cleaned up your chimney and all the creosote that’s still inside. So it should be cleaned every year.”
Chief Verrall says make sure to use well-seasoned wood, not fresh and only burn natural wood, not painted.
He says a chimney fire can turn into a structure fire very quickly and you could lose your home.
