An American company is recalling almost 40 million fire extinguishers across Canada and the United States.
134 brands produced by the Kidde Corporation are being recalled, including 2.7 million in Canada, because the devices can become clogged or require excessive force to open and won’t work in an emergency.
This recall covers extinguishers produced between January 1st, 1973, and August 15th of this year.
Health Canada is reporting only two instances of failed activation, one involving property damage.
Meanwhile, in the US, 391 instances of failure have been noted, resulting in at least 16 injuries and one death.
Kidde says anyone can request a replacement extinguisher free of charge without a proof of purchase.
