A new elementary school on Parade Street will be named ‘Yarmouth Elementary School.’
That was the recommendation of the six member School Steering Team out of a list of nine names.
Also considered were ‘Yarmouth Consolidated Elementary School’ and ‘Center Town School.’
The Tri-County Regional School Board approved the name choice last night.
Students also submitted names, including ‘Unicorn Magic’ and ‘Mr. Purdy’s School,’ after Principal Jared Purdy.
Director of Operations Steve Stoddart says the students have great creativity.
“We had Panda Elementary and Unicorn Magic, kids love to use their imaginations and had explanations for all those names. In the end, we chose the name because the acronym Y.E.S. sends a positive message.”
Work is expected to begin soon on the site of the former Junior high school, with a completion date of September, 2019.
Stoddart says crews will put down cement and foundation this fall, and they will resume the project in the spring.
