Since its humble beginnings nine years ago, the Yarmouth Area Community Fund has put $40,000 back into the community.
It is one of more than 50 funds under the Community Foundation of Nova Scotia. CFNS is part of the Community Foundations of Canada network of 191 different foundations across the country.
Co-chairs Peter and Mary Eldridge have worked tirelessly since 2008 to get the word out.
Peter Eldridge says the fund assists all aspects of the community from art, culture education, healthcare, the environment and more.
“Mary and I have had our eyes open to the number of charities that are often not made public. They are doing very good work in the community”
Mary Eldridge says the fund’s reserves have grown to about $300,000.
“That $300,00 is invested and will grow. Every year some of the income is reinvested. In 10 years it should be $600,000 if all goes well with the stock market .”
The Yarmouth Area Community Fund endowment is invested with all other community funds in the province under the umbrella of the Community Foundation of Nova Scotia.
Donations come from interest earned, the principal is not touched.
