The Port Maitland Fire Department and two other departments responded to the call at a two-storey wooden structure on Hector Street.
Deputy Fire Chief Don Leblanc says their first unit on the scene had two firefighters who saw smoke coming out of the ridge vent and top part of the house.
“They waited until more units showed up and they went upstairs and knocked down the fire and opened up a partition where the fire had been concentrated.”
LeBlanc says there was heavy smoke damage throughout the upper floors and fire damage primarily in one room and part of a hallway and some smoke and water damage to the lower floors.
“We were lucky that the fire did stay contained long enough in the partitions that it didn’t really break out too soon before our people were and were able to deal with it.”
LeBlanc says the house was recently purchased and the homeowner had activated an oil-fired heating system a couple of hours prior to noticing smoke.
No one was hurt.
Yarmouth and Lakes and District Fire Departments also responded.
