Changes are coming for Canadian cell phone users.
The CRTC says beginnning December 1, mobile service providers will have to unlock cell phones and mobile devices for free if the customer asks.
Customers will also have 15 days to try out their new phone with the option to return it and cancel their contract so long as they are below half of their monthly usage limits.
The Canadian Radio and Telecommunication Commission also clarified rules around family or shared plans.
Only the person who’s name is on the account and those they’ve specifically allowed can authorize additional roaming or data charges.
The CRTC also clarified the key terms in a wireless contract and determined they can’t be changed for the duration without the customer’s consent.
Changes to the wireless code come after the CRTC heard from many stakeholders, including consumer groups, individual Canadians and wireless companies.
