Freshwater in Canada is in trouble.
That’s the result from a recent report issued by WWF-Canada.
Bluenose Coastal Action’s Emma Kinley contributed data to the report.
“This report highlights some important issues and it’s sparking a needed conversation of Canadian waterways.”
It cites hydroelectric dams, paper processing, urbanization and oil and gas development as activities which are damaging to the water supply.
Emma Kinley says Canadians need to take notice.
“Most Canadians think that our waterways are pristine. But, we do have issues and if they’re not addressed we might lose valuable habitat or species and the health of our water quality.”
The report goes on to say Canada has 20 per cent of the planet’s freshwater.
Data about the health of that supply needs to be shared nationally to improve monitoring and inform policy decisions.
