Yarmouth’s Rotary Club hosted a luncheon at the Rodd Grand Hotel today with Yarmouth’s provincial election candidates.
The Liberals’ Zach Churchill, the Progressive Conservatives’ Mitch Bonnar and the NDP’s Dave Olie each answered pre-prepared questions on everything from ferry service to healthcare.
In closing statements, Churchill pointed out that Premier Stephen McNeil deserves recognition for being able to make tough decisions.
“He has said no to large corporations and special interest communities. He has done so because he believes he has a responsibility to the broader public and the long-term financial health and sustainability of the province.”
Bonnar detailed a recent meeting he had with a number of teachers.
He says he asked them a question.
“What if I said that I could fix eight problems in the classrooms, but I couldn’t give you any more money? Not one of them said that they cared about the money. They really care about classroom conditions.”
Olie, who ran for them in 2009 says he is all for fiscal responsibility, but balancing budgets can lead to poor decisions by government.
He says when the party was elected that year, they chose to cancel the subsidy to the ferry in obsession of balancing the budget.
Olie says this NDP government would invest in Nova Scotians by having a deficit over the next four years.
Green Party candidate Jim Laverie is in Ottawa and was unable to attend.
