Before heading back to their hometowns, members of the Yarmouth Junior A Mariners received a combined $18,000 in bursaries.
It’s the largest amount ever given out to the players for post-secondary education.
The money comes from 50/50 sales throughout the season.
Co-owner Mitch Bonnar says they try to improve the lives of their players.
“Hopefully we’re doing that in a meaningful way. We try our best to do that and make sure they get a good education. They participate in courses through the winter as well.”
Besides hockey, the Mariners do school visits, and every Wednesday attend Icy Knights, a program for disabled kids.
Bonnar says there is much more to being a Mariner then just playing hockey.
“With our school visits, Icy Knights and donations, we try to be involved in the community as much as we possibly can.”
The team also donated to the Scottie Greene fund and the Dr. Edwin Janke Cancer Centre from the ‘Pink in the Rink’ initiative back in October.
