Tonight’s the night many hockey fans in Yarmouth County have been waiting for.
NHL legends Ray Bourque, Ron Duguay, Stephane Richer and more are in town for a charity hockey game at Mariners Centre against the ‘Yarmouth All-Stars.’
It’s in memory of former minor hockey coach Gary Surette, who was a huge Boston Bruins fan.
Bourque is best known for playing defense with Boston, and is the highest scoring defenseman of all time.
He says it’s enjoyable being able to give back to communities.
“A lot of people put on some great games, and do it for special reasons. This is certainly one that we are looking forward to, and to try and make a difference.”
He won his only Stanley Cup in his final game with the Avalanche in 2001.
Bourque says that was an incredible experience.
“Those precious moments always come up when you’re thinking about that whole run, and how hard it is to win the Cup. I got to the Stanley Cup Final three times, and the third time was the charm after 22 years.
Money raised will go to the Gilles Boudreau Cancer Help Fund and the Lodge that Gives in Halifax.
A tournament in Surette’s memory will be held tomorrow and Sunday.
