As Canada marks the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge, we do so without any veterans of the First World War.
This country lost its last known surviving veteran of the Great War in 2010 when John Babcock died at age 109.
But families and communities will remember their fallen.
In Middle West Pubnico a mass will be held Sunday morning in memory of William Rudolph d’Entremont.
d’Entremont died in the battle of Vimy Ridge and is buried in France.
Bernice d’Entremont of the Musée des Acadiens des Pubnicos says they have letters that d’Entremont wrote from the front lines and he still has family in the area.
“People have an attachment to him. He is one of the first names on the Cenotaph in West Pubnico. People look at his picture and say ‘yes, he looks like my uncle’, or somebody.”
The mass will take at 9am Sunday from the Church of St Peter in Middle West Pubnico.
Another celebration will be held April 27 at the Acadian Museum.
