The president of the Nova Scotia Teachers Union is pleased with the initial steps taken by the council to improve classroom conditions.
The 14-person panel released a list of 18 recommendations including eight that are being implemented immediately.
They include eliminating three provincially mandated exams and a five-year moratorium on new school board and provincially initiated assessments.
Liette Doucet says it’s a positive step forward.
“These are things that could’ve been done a long time ago and should’ve been done a long time ago. They will make a big difference to teachers in the classroom. This is where we are and I’m happy that we will see these happening.”
But, Doucet says major reforms are still required.
“Class caps for junior high and senior high and release time for teachers to work on individual program plans. We’re not seeing any increased support for students with special needs.”
The initial report from the council is expected by April 28.
