The Cook’s Cup will be handed out this season after all.
The annual high school hockey tournament, hosted by the Yarmouth High Vikings was scrapped this past December due to work-to-rule job action by Nova Scotia teachers.
Last month, the Nova Scotia School Athletic Federation cancelled all provincial tournaments for hockey as well.
Par-en-Bas was set to host Division 3 provincials March 24-26 at Mariners Centre.
Sharks Head Coach Julien Boudreau says that’s how this tournament came together.
“We still wanted to host a tournament. I know Yarmouth wanted to give out their Cook’s Cup. So we thought, since we aren’t allowed to host provincials, why not reach out to them and see if we can do a partnership.”
Vikings Head Coach Craig Minard says it’s nice that teams can wear their school colours again.
“It’s been an interesting year for the high school teams, especially with teachers going to work-to-rule. We had to put aside our high school colours and play under Hockey Nova Scotia’s Midget X league.”
Minard says his team is excited to wear new sweaters purchased before work-to-rule began.
Teams from Digby, Barrington, Central Kings and West Kings will also take part.
This will be the last tournament of the season for Yarmouth High, who played as the ‘Spitfires’ in the Midget X league.
Par-en-Bas, who played as the Yarmouth Oceanic, will play in the SEDMHA Midget X tournament in April.
