There’s a distinct possibility of lawsuits being filed against the provincial government over boundaries.
Queens-Shelburne MLA Sterling Belliveau has indicated he’s talking to lawyers about launching a lawsuit of his own.
PC Leader Jamie Baillie said that his party intends to file a lawsuit against the McNeil government if they call an election prior to addressing the issue.
Nova Scotia’s Court of Appeal ruled changes made to the province’s electoral map in 2012 violate a fundamental charter right.
Acadians argued it took away their voice in the legislature.
Argyle-Barrington MLA Chris d’Entremont says the issue of having something found to be unconstitutional should take a level of importance.
“If the government is planning on running a snap election without the boundaries being addressed then I think it’s incumbent upon us, as opposition, to use all our legal opportunities to try and block that.”
d’Entremont says at least the process needs to be started but that’s being ignored by the Liberals.
“It’s not just Argyle. Clare or Richmond, every boundary in Nova Scotia is unconstitutional. But I think they’ve (Liberals) have got all their work done. They’re politically saying ‘we can win these constituencies with the current political configuration and we don’t want to mess that up.”
