16 headstones at Yarmouth Mountain Cemetery were damaged last week.
The stones were either pushed down or broken, some of them irreplaceable.
The cemetery’s superintendent believes high school students on their lunch break last Monday were responsible. He says he was saddened to learn of the damage.
“I’m so disappointed in mankind. You wonder why some of the acting out towards people, families…Because that’s what they’re addressing when they damage someone else’s property. It’s upsetting.”
The superintendent says he’s made a request to Yarmouth Consolidated Memorial High School that students no longer travel through the cemetery.
“Four of them are marble and it’s really difficult to repair them . In some cases you have to dig them all up but it’s never the same.”
