A Yarmouth program matching at-risk youth with families has not been successful.
In 2015, Executive Director of SHYFT Youth Services Adam Dolliver created the ‘Host Family Program.’
The idea: to bring together 16-18 year old teens and host families to provide a safe living space.
Dolliver says so far, no one has participated in the program.
He says there are a number of things contributing to that.
“Community members are hesitant to open their homes to unknown, homeless youth. There is a large stigma attached to our youth in the community. We wouldn’t try to match youth who have volatile behaviour issues. We are looking for people who are open and knowledgeable, and open to working with us to make life better for these youth.”
Dolliver says SHYFT doesn’t have the funds to guarantee compensation if a home is damaged, so families must sign a liability waiver.
Despite the concerns, Dolliver says there is a need for this program here, and urges anyone interested to contact SHYFT Youth Services.
