Government has released details of the contract it will impose on teachers.
A key part of the legislation is the creation of a Council to Improve Classroom Conditions.
The council will be made up of four representatives appointed by the Department of Education, one appointed by the union and nine classroom teachers.
It will have $10 million dollars to apply towards classroom improvements.
Teachers will see no wage increases in the first two years, 1% in the third, 1.5% in the fourth and .5% on last day of the contract.
That is the same offer set out in the first two tentative agreements.
Teachers will be responsible to provide extra help and attend meetings with management and parents.
They will be free to refuse any voluntary activities such as coaching or supervising school dances.
Education Minister Karen Casey believes teachers will choose to volunteer for those functions.
“This legislation is not to say to teachers, you must volunteer your time. That’s not something that we can legislate. That’s something that the teacher has to decide on their own.”
The agreement is set to expire on July 31, 2019.
First reading of the bill will begin tonight at 8:00pm.
