Blizzard conditions have closed schools, provincial and municipal offices and some businesses in the Tri-Counties.
Environment Canada has issued storm surge and blizzard warnings.
The snow started around 9 p.m. last night in Yarmouth.
A further 20 to 30 centimetres of snow is forecast for today then tapering off to flurries tonight with another 2 to 4 centimetres.
The wind will be a big factor with gusts today and up to midnight of 110 kilometres an hour. Don Houston of the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal says drifting snow is a big problem.
“The Chebogue area, Main Shore, Sandford…we’ve got the heavy down there but we’re having a hard time keeping it poked open. By the time we get from one end of it to the other it’s blown back in. Shelburne seems to be a little worse than the Yarmouth area. They had to escort an ambulance this morning and got a grader stuck. When you get one of those stuck, there’s a lot of snow down. There’s very limited visibility. Saulnierville is having some problems along Trunk 1 but overall there doesn’t seem to be quite as much snow up that way. The 103 up Shelburne way is definitely going to be the worse.”
Houston is urging motorists to stay off the roads.
