PC Leader Jamie Baillie issued a statement Sunday night saying that due to the winter storm all provincial government offices in mainland Nova Scotia are closed Monday yet Premier Stephen McNeil remains determined to resume the House of Assembly to introduce legislation to impose a contract on teachers.
Baillie says he’s calling on Premier Stephen McNeil to put safety first and postpone the resumption of the House of Assembly.
He says they are calling on Premier McNeil and Speaker Kevin Murphy to prioritize the safety of the staff of the Legislature. This includes commissionaires, sanitation staff, library personnel, and other legislative personnel.
The statement says the PC Caucus is also concerned for the safety of students, families and teachers who may travel to the legislature for the bill’s introduction tomorrow. Numerous school boards have already cancelled classes.
It says Halifax Transit has cancelled all public transportation for tomorrow and the Minister of Transportation has advised that ‘strong winds and heavy snow are a recipe for difficult driving conditions.’ The minister continued to say that ‘motorists are advised to stay off the roads if possible for their safety and to allow plow drivers to safely clear the roads.’
Baillie says there is no emergency facing Nova Scotia students that warrants any risk to safety associated with opening the Nova Scotia House of Assembly on Monday.
