The McNeil Liberals are being accused of dragging their feet on redrawing the electoral boundaries.
The Progressive Conservatives want the premier to recall legislature now to appoint independent boundary review commission
Opposition House Leader Chris d’Entremont says it’s been three weeks since Nova Scotia’s Court of Appeal made its decision public
regarding the so-called protected ridings of Argyle, Clare and Richmond.
“The court of appeal came down with its report and its recommendation that our boundaries were unconstitutional over three weeks ago and we really haven’t heard anything from the government yet, so I’m just calling on the government that time is ticking away, that there needs to be some kind of response and quite honestly I think there can be some boundary adjustments before the next election.”
d’Entremont says if nothing changes before the next election then the Fédération acadienne de la Nouvelle-Écosse would likely
decide the next step.
“They are the ones who fought this in the court of appeal. It is their decision whether they want to call the rest of it unconstitutional. so, if the boundaries were unconstitutional in 2012 and then again in the 2013 election, that really puts all the work that we did as legislators in question…we were elected on unconstitutional grounds. There’s a much further point here that the Acadian Federation can go. I just want the government to start the process to make us understand where it wants to go so that we can participate in it wholly.”
d’Entremont says it would be wrong to run the election on the unconstitutional boundaries.
