An incredible showing of community in Yarmouth today.
Together, the Yarmouth Hospital Foundation and Y95-CJLS hosted the first ever We Care Radiothon at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital.
A fundraising goal of $35,000 was set to help purchase a new portable ultrasound for the regional intensive care unit.
That mark was shattered by noon thanks to generous donations from local residents and businesses, who challenged each other to match donations.
The hospital waived parking fees for the day so they could be donated, and Murray GM matched change donations.
The final total has surpassed $87,000 and is still growing.
Dr. Brian Moses says the ultrasound will help in diagnosing patients quickly when they first arrive.
“Previously we had to rely on diagnostic equipment downstairs, and the diagnostic imaging suite to be able to have this ultrasound in the ICU. Now we’ll be able to understand what’s going on with a patient immediately and treat them much quicker.”
Chair of the foundation’s marketing committee Jeff Little says it’s hard to know how an event will go the first time you host it.
“We kept going, and momentum built throughout the day and by the time we were done we ended up with over $82,000. It’s just unbelievable. We couldn’t have done it without community support. What a great area Yarmouth and all of the Tri-Counties are.”
Little says he hopes this will become an annual event, to go along with the Jody Shelley Golf Fore Health tournament and the Spring Gala.
He says money raised at those events will go to other medical equipment needs.
