That fur coat your dog is wearing won’t protect it against exposure.
With winter weather in the forecast and temperatures scheduled to take a big drop, pet owners are reminded not to leave their animals tied up outside.
Vice President of the Lunenburg County SPCA Greg Welsh says despite a law being passed in 2014 that makes it illegal to tether an animal outside during harsh weather, he still hears the complaints.
“I get numerous phone calls. You know people [saying] , I drove past this property and this dog has been out, chained all day long and the people are at work.”
The Animal Protection Act says animals must be provided with shelter, water and food and not be tied up for more than twelve hours.
Welsh says failure to give these to your pet can result in large fines.
“I don’t know if the people don’t realize that it’s illegal to tether a dog all day long.”
Welsh encourages anyone who sees animals in distress to call the SPCA and an enforcement officer will be sent out help.
