The Yarmouth Town RCMP is getting good grades from the mayor.
Pam Mood says she’s very pleased with the job they are doing policing the town.
She says while protective services amounts to over 30 per cent of the town’s annual budget, she believes taxpayers
are getting their money’s worth.
“You have to understand what you get for the money. For us, the RCMP, and what we’re getting for what we’re putting out, we’re more than happy with the service.”
The mayor says beyond policing, the RCMP provide a police dog service, investigative services, crime scene analysis, drug section and more.
She says under the contract, additional resources can be called in for a major case.
Mayor Mood says she knows some people complain about a lack of foot patrols in the downtown, but she doesn’t see
it that way.
“The RCMP, especially during the tourism season, multiply their downtown patrols tenfold and they do so accordingly with how many people are in town and how much activity is going on.”
The annual RCMP budget is approximately $5.5 million dollars based on last year’s figures.
The town of Shelburne recently sent Bridgewater council a letter asking how much it would cost to provide it with municipal police service.
Shelburne’s mayor says the cost of the federal force is an issue, not performance.
