A new memorial service for fishermen lost at sea will take place this summer in Shelburne.
Mayor Karen Mattatall received council’s support last week to create a service at the Fishermen’s Memorial on Dock Street.
The first one will take place on June 11.
Mayor Mattatall says she’s been wanting to do this project for a while.
“Fishing communities certainly have had the sad tragedies of people who have lost their life to the sea. I thought, we have this beautiful memorial on our waterfront and we don’t do a service. I thought it was time to do that.”
The mayor says details are still being worked out, but it will be an afternoon service.
She says music and prayer will be part of it, and other municipal units will be invited to participate.
