This following comments yesterday made by Premier Stephen McNeil during a media scrum.
“Those were not days off, they were days that were actually for marking,” he said. “They’re being characterized as ‘days off’, they were prep/mark, and kids would be in school so there are subs associated with that. But those aren’t vacation days that you can just go. They were really geared towards marking.”
According to the NSTU, McNeil’s comments contradict documents the union received during negotiations.
The Teachers Union says they have lost faith in the bargaining process.
President Liette Doucet says if the Premier is capable of misleading members about two self-directed development days, then he is capable of misleading parents about the $20 million outlined in the deal to improve classroom conditions.
It isn’t known what this latest action will mean for the ratification vote that was scheduled for February 8, however the province says they have no intention of rescinding the offer that’s on the table.
