Yarmouth’s mayor says there’s a lot to consider when it comes to any expansion of the Mariners Centre.
A feasibility study was released last night estimating the cost of the proposal at over $30 million.
Pam Mood says there is no doubt an expansion of some type is needed, but within realistic terms.
“My initial impression is they they certainly need an expansion at the Mariners Centre, it’s a big draw for people to move to the area.
But the price tag is high and that is a consideration. I’d say the stars have to align for this to happen anytime in the near future.”
The study determined that the YMCA, at its present location on Main Street. was no longer sustainable but could thrive as part of a new complex
Mayor Mood says growing the downtown core is always front and center.
“We need anchors in the downtown, but I don’t believe we make a move like this unless it will maintain where we are or unless it’s going to bring us better results in the end. If everything aligns and everything works out I don’t have an issue with it at this point.”
The study also said the Yarmouth curling club, as it exists, is no longer sustainable.
An expanded Mariners Centre would replace both the existing Y and curling club.
The Mariners Centre is owned by the town and the municipality of Yarmouth.
