The second floor was closed for public use after it failed to meet fire safety standards.
The fire department used to host bingos, dances and receptions which generated extra revenue for them.
Mayor Pam Mood says in the past couple of years new doors, windows and siding have been installed along with a new
exit stairway in the back of the building.
She says they are now in the process of reinforcing the second floor’s main beams, fireproofing the underside of the floor
and installing washrooms.
Mood says that should be done in the very near future.
“The firefighters are there, the auxiliary is very active. I think all of us in town miss having access to the second floor.”
The mayor believes the investment is worth it.
“We wouldn’t be putting this money in if we didn’t believe that it would serve our purposes for the next few years.
We did do a study, we had experts come in and look at the difference between putting work into this hall and building a new hall.
The answer was that we could do this work and we would be good for some years.”
The building on Pleasant Street is about 40 years old.
