It could be a while though before a part of the former Dominion Textile building in Yarmouth is torn down.
Demolition of the middle section on the west side of the complex was approved by the three area councils.
It was the only option given the high costs associated with bringing it up to code.
Seven years ago it was estimated the price tag to be around $7 million. It would cost even more today.
The chair of the Yarmouth Area Industrial Commission, Yarmouth Deputy Mayor Phil Mooney, says there’s a lot of work
to be done before the walls come down.
He says first the three councils have to sign the contract.
“From what I understand from John Sullivan, who is part of the project team…Alain Muise from the Municipality of Argyle,
Jeff Gushue from the Town of Yarmouth and Ken Moses from the Municipality of Yarmouth will be signing the contract in the next
couple of weeks and then they’ll (contractor) get ready to work on the inside getting it ready to come down. They will remove lead
paint and any other contaminants from inside.”
He says demolition will likely start in May or June.
“Then there will be an opportunity for a business there to expand or we have areas if anyone else wants to come down.
It’s a great piece of property so we’re open to an ideas or possibilities.”
Mooney says the contract was awarded to Dexter Construction for $3.1 million.
