It could be an easy way to drastically increase the number of organ donors in Nova Scotia.
Currently, to donate your organs you must “opt-in” by indicating you wish to donate when you renew your health card.
Premier Stephen McNeil says he would favour an “opt-out” system for organ donations.
Under that scheme, every Nova Scotian would become an organ donor unless they specifically opt out of the program.
“I think if the issue is reversed and I’m an automatic donor, then it makes it easier for the health care provider to go back to my family.”
McNeil says it is difficult for families to make the decision to donate when they have just lost a loved one.
“My personal view is that, I’ve signed my donor card all along. I’ve heard from different people though that it is challenging at times for the health care provider to then ask my loved ones to go through the process.”
McNeil says consultations would be needed with the public and health care providers before any changes would be made.
