There are over 300 fire hydrants in the town of Yarmouth.
After the weekend storm, most were buried under snow.
Mayor Pam Mood says it takes a lot of helping hands.
“Usually the fire department gets volunteers to take care of that, but we do ask residents to go out and maybe dig around the fire hydrants themselves. A lot of folks have done that in the past.”
Fire Chief John Verrall says any help would be greatly appreciated.
“If there are people out there with a fire hydrant in front of or around their house, it would be nice if they could clear it out. Make sure there is a path around it of about three or four feet, that way we can get around it if there is an emergency. If we had a structure fire going, it would take us a lot longer to put it out if we had to dig through snow to get to a fire hydrant.”
As for clearing sidewalks in front of downtown shops, Mayor Mood says that is the responsibility of the business owner.
