Canadians are expected to make today the busiest shopping day of the year, according to Moneris.
The payment processing company says last year, they processed 19.2 million transactions on the 23rd.
Spokesperson Rob Cameron says the winning categories in purchases are women’s clothing, electronics and sporting equipment, but that’s not all.
“Plus you get a lot of food shopping and alcohol purchases as people get ready for the holiday weekend,” says Cameron.
He says part of the reason is most people are given half a day off today by their employers which gives them longer to shop.
He adds December 23rd has a very wide margin over the 2nd and 3rd most popular shoppings days of Black Friday and Boxing Day.
Moneris says they are also expecting the use of tap payment to be up significantly this year, especially since Black Friday registered an increase of 121% in tap payments.
