The Digby Food Bank is being forced to cut back on many items it normally stocks.
It simply cannot afford them.
Many are considered staple food items.
The food bank will go into 2017 with a deficit, something that has rarely occurred
President Roger Tibbetts says they’ve had to make some hard decisions.
“Peanut butter has been one of our staple products and we haven’t bought peanut butter for the last six months. For example, 150 families and everyone gets one jar a month, at $4 a jar, that’s $600, times 12, that’s $7200. Eggs and margarine will cost us $5000 a year.”
He says next year they will have to look at cutting back on other high dollar items like molasses and powdered milk.
Tibbetts says individuals and organizations only have so much money for charities.
“Times are tough. There’s not as much money going around and everyone has to prioritize which charities they’re going to support and by how much.
We understand that.”
The Town of Digby is considering a request from the food bank $3,250 over and above the $750 the town has previously granted.
The town is offering $1500.
Tibbetts says they are very grateful to everyone who has supported them through the year.
