Officials at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital have transitioned from emergency operations to project planning in response
to massive flooding.
A pipe broke early Saturday morning sending water cascading down five floors and into the basement.
Hospital spokesman Fraser Mooney says the cleanup and remediation will take time because it must be done safely
and properly.
“We need to make sure that all the proper infection control measures are taken. We’re going to be meeting with managers again today to discuss how that’s going to look but we need to make sure that everything is dried and appropriate for staff to get back into their regular work places, but it is going to take a while.”
MRI appointments have been cancelled today and Mooney says the situation will be reassessed tomorrow.
“Saturday and Sunday were spent cleaning up a lot of debris, sopping up the water and what not, Monday trying to get things back to normal as possible and here it is Tuesday and we realize this is going to be a long term project.”
He says while diagnostic and other medical equipment was not damaged, getting staff and patients to the equipment safely during the
cleanup is the concern.
“The public has been very understanding and and the work that the volunteers have been doing has been nothing less than remarkable.”
