The RCMP are postponing a force wide implementation of Body Worn Cameras after a three year feasibility study.
RCMP Chief Superintendent Eric Stubbs says during their study, they found no camera unit on the market today was sufficiently robust, or properly designed for their needs.
He says they had strict requirements because of the variety of environments the RCMP works in.
They have 11,000 members in 750 RCMP detachments across the entire country from the High Arctic, to Vancouver Island, and Atlantic Canada and before they buy between 5,000 and 7,000 of these cameras, they want to make sure they are getting the best possible product with taxpayer dollars.
Stubbs says apart from tech, design, and manufacturing issues, there are also privacy, and data storage concerns to be addressed.
He highlights the fact they aren’t saying no to Body Worn Cameras forever, and they will continue to search for the right product.
