A former Yarmouth Mariner is making noise on the university scene.
Mathieu Pompei was a standout for the Mariners in their run to Game 7 of the league championship in 2012.
Now, the 25 year old is in his fifth season with the McGill Redmen, and leads the league in scoring with 29 points in 17 games.
Pompei was recently named a U Sports men’s hockey All-Star and is the only player on the team that didn’t play in the Canadian Hockey League.

The team will face Canada’s National Junior squad in exhibition games Monday and Tuesday in Quebec.
Pompei says it’s an honour to be selected.
“The feeling is unbelievable. I can’t be more excited for these games. For me not playing CHL and playing in Yarmouth, I think it was just me keeping my game simple and keep playing how I know I can play, and at the end of the day it doesn’t make much difference.”
Pompei says they want to do their best against Canada.
“These guys are top prospects in the world. We’re there to help them get ready, and hopefully we can put up a good fight against them this week.’
Pompei is in his final season of university.
As for the future, he is hoping to sign a deal to play in Europe.
He says thinking about his time as a Mariner still gives him chills, and he wants to come back to Yarmouth for a visit soon.
Good luck to the @MarinersHockey this season #bleedblue
