A section of Starrs Road in Yarmouth is expected to be lined with teachers and their supporters this afternoon.
Members of the Yarmouth Local of the NSTU (Nova Scotia Teachers Union) are planning an information picket along Starrs Rd from 3:30 to 5:30.
Local NSGEU (Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union) members are also expected to join the teachers in a display of solidarity.
Yesterday saw tensions mount between the NSTU and the government.
The province had planned to table legislation yesterday forcing the teachers to accept a contract they had previously rejected.
That changed by afternoon when Education Minister Karen Casey announced schools would open today.
Schools were closed to students Monday after the government said Saturday that work-to-rule guidelines for teachers and principals put students at risk.
Casey said the province is confident the Nova Scotia Teachers Union “modified its directives to teachers in such a way that schools can now open safely.”

NSTU president Liette Doucet always maintained student safety wouldn’t be in jeopardy — and teachers and principals were already told to put safety ahead of any work-to-rule protocol.
