Massive protests surrounded province house in Halifax on Monday.
Hundreds of students showed up in the morning to let the government know they weren’t pleased to be out of class.
Kenzie Donnelly helped organize the student walkouts around the province last Friday as well as the protest.
She says this is about gratitude for the work teachers do everyday.
“I’ve been lucky enough to have the most amazing teachers since elementary school who have helped me through more than they even know. To have that that opportunity to give back to them means more than I can put into words.”
Donnelly says she’s glad to be getting back to class but that she will continue to work to support teachers.
Later in the afternoon, thousands more protesters descended on province house.
Starting at parade square, they beat drums, chanted and waved flags as they marched around province house before rallying on the front steps.
Trish Keeping organized the protest out of a Facebook group supporting teachers.
She says the government is running out of options.
“It’s at a point where they have a choice to make right now. They either do something that’s going to work, that teachers can live with – that we can live with or, when they call the election, they’re going to be gone.”
Keeping says their fight is not over until teachers get the support they need.
