A popular sporting event in Yarmouth will not go ahead this year.
The Cook’s Cup high school hockey tournament that was scheduled this weekend at Mariners Centre has been canceled due to work-to-rule job action by the Nova Scotia Teachers Union.
Yarmouth Vikings Manager Tina Comeau says they were hanging on to hope, as it’s a major fundraiser for the team.
“It’s also a very significant event for the community in terms of the economic spin-off for the hotels, restaurants, shops, gas stations, Mariners Centre, etc. So it’s with a heavy heart that we pull the plug, but we completely understand the situation. There are bigger things at play. We look forward to holding the event next year. For many students, part of the school experience goes beyond what happens in the classroom. Obviously, the classroom is extremely important, but for many kids the extracurricular activities are important too.”
11 teams were scheduled to take part.
Comeau says the team is appreciative of the Mariners Centre, school administrators and volunteers that would have donated their time to the event.
She says the Vikings are hoping for a quick resolution between teachers and the province.
