Job-action by Nova Scotia’s 9,000 plus teachers scheduled to start Monday means no more school sports.
The Nova Scotia School Athletics Federation announced earlier this week that all school sports will be canceled until the job-action is over.
A teacher and the Athletic Director at Yarmouth Consolidated Memorial High School says he’ll certainly have more free time.
Jim Surette also coaches the senior boys basketball team, and says the students are disappointed.
“They initially pointed the blame toward the teachers, but in reality when the students got to know a little bit more about it, they realized it’s come down from our union, and we have to follow what the union tells us.”
Surette says sports are a huge part of school life, so things will certainly be different at YCMHS.
He is hopeful for a quick resolution between the NSTU and the province.
“We are hopeful this will get resolved quick so we can get our teams back on the court and the ice.”
Next weekend, the annual Cook’s Cup high school hockey tournament is scheduled at Mariners Centre, but it will be canceled if the work-to-rule is still in effect.
